    Toni Sailer
    Toni Sailer was and still remains a bone fide Kitzbühel legend. The former ski star and singer also worked as head coach of the Austria Ski Team and race director of the legendary Hahnenmann downhill race. Toni Sailer will always be associated with KItzbühel!
    • Born 17 November 1935 in Kitzbühel
    • Member of the "Kitzbüheler Wunderteams" (Christian Pravda, Ernst Hinterseer, Anderl Molterer, Fritz Huber, Hias Leitner) 
    • Won three gold medals at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Slalom, Giant Slalom, Downhill)
    • A the 1958 Ski World Championships in Bad Gastein he won gold in the Downhill, Giant Slalom and Combined events as well as silver in the slalom and many further awards
    • One of the most successful skiers of all time
    • Attended an acting school in Berlin and featured in numerous TV shows and films such as "König der silbernen Berge" and "Der schwarze Blitz". 
    • Singer with 18 records to his name
    • 1972 – 1976 head coach and technical director of the Austria Ski Team
    • 1986 – 2006 race director of the Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel
    • 1999: voted Sportsman of the Century
    • Died 24 August 2009 in Kitzbühel

    Jane Tilden
    This actress, who appeared in numerous productions at the Volkstheater in Vienna and continued acting until 2000, considered Kitzbühel her second home and would come here as often as possible between her roles at the famous Burgtheater in Vienna.

    • Real name: Marianne Wilhelmine Tuch
    • Discovered in 1930 by Max Reinhardt
    • First appeared at the Volkstheater in Vienna in 1934
    • 1936: first ever film role in "Konfetti"
    • When war broke out she moved to Switzerland, where she appeared in small roles in 14 films until 1945
    • Returned to Austria – many roles at the Raimund Theater and theTheater an der Josefstadt in Vienna as well as the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin 
    • 1956 utntil 1977: ensemble member at the Burgtheater in Vienna
    • Kitzbühel was her second home
    • Continued working as an actress until 2000
    • Selected films: Hauptsache glücklich, Pünktchen und Anton, Hotel Paradies, Alte Liebe-neues Glück, Tatort, Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald. 
    • Died 27 August 2002 in Kitzbühel
    • Had a road in Vienna named after her, the "Jane-Tilden-Gasse", in 2006

    The Austrian skiing legend and member of the famous "Kitzbühel Wunderteams" won numerous races for Austria before emigrating to North America.

    • 1937: member of the Kitzbühel Ski Club
    • 1952: silber medal at the Winter Olympics in Oslo
    • 1954: downhill world champion in Are, Sweden
    • Silver in the combined event in Are
    • Many further successes in North America
    • 1956: won the downhill, slalom and combined in Sun Valley, where he lived
    • 1958: became Austrian slalom champion for the third time
    • Later worjed as a ski instructor in the USA and taught many celebrities to ski
    • Returned to Austria at the start of the 1970s
    • Died 11 November 1994 in Kitzbühel

    Alfons Walde
    Kitzbühel's most famous painter is without a doubt Alfons Walder. He designed the logo which is today synonymous with the village, while his posters promoting Tyrol as a tourism destination became famous the world over.
    • Born 8 February 1891 in Oberndorf
    • 1892: moved to Kitzbühel, where his father Franz Walde became headteacher at the local school
    • Influenced by the secessionism movement, he painted still life, landscapes and scenes depicting life on the land
    • 1920 until 1938: became world famous through his posters showing landscapes and winter sports
    • 1910 until 1914: studied at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna
    • Meetings with Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, supported by the architect Robert Oerley
    • First exhibitions in Innsbruck from 1911
    • 1918: oil paintings such as "Jahrmarkt in Kitzbühel" and "Kirchgang" as well as nudes such as "Badende am Schwarzsee". 
    • 1919: became friends with the Viennese poet Alfons Petzold, who lived in Kitzbühel
    • 1923: founded the Kunstverlag Alfons Walde publishing house
    • 1925: received the Julius Reich Art Foundation Prize
    • 1927: designed the bottom and top stations for the Hahnenkammbahn cable car in Kitzbühel
    • 1929: build a home on the slopes of the Hahnenkamm
    • 1932: created his first official Tyrol poster
    • From 1946 he focused increasingly on architectural projects
    • 1956: was awarded the title "professor"

    "The Flying Countess" was the first female ski jumper and the source of much jealousy in Kitzbühel thanks to her perfect style and flapping skirt.

    • Pioneer of women's ski jumping
    • Known as "The Flying Countess"
    • 1908: jumped an impressive 24 metres on the Schattberg ski jump in Kitzbühel wearing a long skirt
    • Lebenberg Castle was used from 1885 onwards as a bed & breakfast and later a hotel (one of the first in Kitzbühel)
    • Married Franz Valentin Count Schlick, an automobile racer
    • Killed in an accident at a sidecar race organised by the Bavarian Automobile Club in Berchtesgaden
    • Died 4 September 1927

    Toni Praxmair made Kitzbühel famous around the world thanks to his songs. He also established a tradition which continues until today: the Tyrolean evening at the Café Praxmair.

    • Was a musician with passion, talent and skill
    • Created the famous Tyrolean evening at the Café Praxmair
    • Today he would be called an entertainer or showmaster
    • He was ahead of his time and was often ridiculed when talking about his plans to take the local songs of Kitzbühel out into the wide world
    • 1934: first journey to England, which lasted two months
    • In the following years he travelled the world
    • Despite his busy schedule he alwas had time for the Tyrolean evening at the Café Praxmair
    • Died 26.12.1991 in Kitzbühel
    • The Café Praxmair is still a traditional coffeehouse in the heart of Kitzbühel

    Peter Aufschnaiter
    Born in Kitzbühel, Peter Aufschnaiter was a researcher who became famous for his work in Nepal. It was there that he worked as an agricultural engineer and cartographer. He was also a member of the famous Himalaya expedition led by Heinrich Harrer.

    • Son of a carpenter in Kitzbühel
    • Trained as an agricultural engineer and chemist in Innsbruck and Munich
    • It was during this time that he developed a great interest in the Himalayas
    • Learned English, Italian and Hindi
    • 1929: took part in an expedition to the Kangchenjunga mountain
    • Remained fascinated by the Himalayas throughout his life
    • 1939: was a member of the famous Himalayan expedition led by Heinrich Harrer 
    • Stayed in Nepal, worked there for the Indian government as a cartographer and agricultrual engineer
    • Returned to Europe in the early 1970s due to ill health
    • Died 1973 in Innsbruck and buried in Kitzbühel
    • His grave remained decorated with Tibetan prayer flags until today

    • Some of his works are the frescoes in the Oberndorf parish church, the paintings in the Liebfrauenkirche church in Kitzbühel and the frescoes in Jochberg

    The Austrian dancer Erna Carise was a true globetrotter and spent much of her life travelling the world, but after the end of her career she returned to her beloved Kitzbühel.

    • Performed at a young age throughout Europe as Erna Carise
    • Particularly success from 1934 to 1936
    • Appeared in the "Die Königin der Revue" together with her close friedn Josephine Baker
    • After the end of her dancing career she became famous in Austria for her book "Punktediät"
    • Recorded a song and wrote the book "All about Kitzbühel"
    • Died 1981 in Kitzbühel
